چکیده

Kelner (1949), working with conidia of Streptomyces griseus, discovered that light belonging to the visible range is capable of reactivating biological material that has been rendered inactive by ultraviolet radiation (WJY). Shortly after Kelner's discovery was known, a similar phenomenon in bacteriophages (bacterial viruses) was observed by accident. Plates of nutrient agar containing UV-inactivated phage and sensitive bacteria had been left for several hours on a table illuminated by a fluorescent lamp. After incubation it was noticed that the number of plaques was higher on these plates than on similar plates incubated in darkness. A short report of this phenomenon of "photoreactivation" (PHTR) has already been published (Dulbecco, 1949). The present paper contains the results of a first group of experiments concerning PHTR of seven bacteriophages of the T group active on Escherichia coli, strain B.

Photoreactivation of Ultraviolet-irradiated Escherichia Coli, with Special Reference to the Dose-reduction Principle and to Ultraviolet-induced Mutation.

A sufficient dose of ultraviolet light (2,0537 A) inactivates most microorganisms. Exposure of inactivated cells to suitable visible light results in the recovery of a large portion of the cells from their otherwise fatal ultraviolet-induced injury. The discovery of light-induced recovery (Kelner, 1949) and its confirmation for bacteriophage by Dulbecco (1949) gives us fresh hope for solving th...

Degree of ultraviolet radiation damage and repair capabilities are related to G+C content in marine vibriophages

A key issue in the ecology of viruses in the marine environment is the rate of viral production and decay. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight has been found to cause loss of infectivity in marine bacteriophages at rates nearly equal to all other decay mechanisms combined. There are 2 main host-mediated mechanisms that can repair UV-damaged phage DNA: photoreactivation and excision repai...

Reactivation by Manganous Chloride of Spores Inactivated by Nitrogen Mustard.

enon, photoreactivation, was later observed in several other organisms such as bacteriophages (DULBECCO 1950), bacteria and fungi of the genera Penicillium and Neurospora ( KELNER 1952). Reactivation of cells inactivated by ultraviolet irradiation was also obtained by means of pyruvic acid and other acids of the Krebs cycle (THOMPSON, MEFFERD and WYSS 1951; HEINMETS et al. 1954). Up to the end ...

Effect of potassium nitrate on photoreactivation of Escherichia coli cells.

Photoreactivation is the repair of ultraviolet radiation damage in a biological system with light of wavelength longer than that of the damaging radiation (Jagger1). A wide variety of ultraviolet induced effects may be reversed by photoreactiva tion, including killing, mutations, division delay, block in the DNA synthesis, etc. Such photoreactiva tion effects generally involve the photoenzyma...

Studies on the ability of light to counteract the inactivating action of ultraviolet radiation on plant viruses.

Of seven plant viruses tested, all except tobacco mosaic showed the phenomenon of photoreactivation, i.e. plants exposed to visible light after inoculation with preparations partially inactivated by ultraviolet radiation produced more local lesions than plants kept in darkness. Five straiIis of tobacco mosaic virus, which differed widely in their pathogenicity and other properties, were tested,...
